A workshop manual for the operation, maintenance and repair of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class with sedan, coupe and second-generation coupe (manufactured in Germany). The engine is longitudinally front, rear or permanent four-wheel drive 4Matic. The petrol engines are a 4-cylinder in-line 1.8-liter (C180K) with a compressor, a 4-cylinder in-line volume of 2.0 liters (S200K) with a compressor, a 4-cylinder in-line 2.3-liter (C230K) with a compressor, a 6-cylinder V-shaped volume of 2.6 l (C240), 6-cylinder V-shaped volume of 3.2 liters (C320 and C32 AMG). CDI direct injection turbodiesel – 4-cylinder inline volume of 2.2 liters (C200 CDI, C220 CDI), 5-cylinder inline volume of 2.7 liters C270 CDI), 5-cylinder inline 3.0 L (CDI AMG). The gearbox is a 5- or b-step mechanical or 5-speed automatic.

The service manual contains detailed sections on the operation and maintenance of the car, engine repair, transmission, running gear, steering gear, braking system, electrical equipment and bodywork.

The Mercedes-Benz W202 Series is a compact executive car produced from 1993–2000, under the C-Class model names. In May 1993, the first generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class was introduced as a replacement for the 190. The C-Class sedan was the company's entry-level model up until 1997, at which time Mercedes-Benz launched the smaller A-Class. Styling themes were carried over from the previous W201 series. 1,847,382 W202 models were produced.

Originally Mercedes-Benz models were badged with numbers followed by letters, such as 190 E. Starting with the W202 Series, Mercedes-Benz began to name all models using letters before the number, for example, C 180 or C 220. The W202 C-Class was the first Mercedes-Benz model to use the new, modern naming scheme.

On its debut, the W202 C-Class was the only Mercedes model with a complete lineup of multi-valve engines. The new family of four-cylinder petrol units, called M111, debuted in the C 180 (1.8 L, 122 PS (90 kW; 120 hp)), C 200 (2.0 L, 136 PS (100 kW; 134 hp) and C 220 (2.2 L, 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp), the only four-cylinder of the range sold in the U.S.). In 1997 the C 220 was replaced by the C 230, enlarged to 2.3 L displacement but with the same output, although with torque increased to 220 Nm (162 lb-ft). The C 280 was the high-end model of the class, with a four-valve-per-cylinder straight-six engine, capable of reaching 193 PS (142 kW; 190 hp).

The original W202 models came standard in Germany with a five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions optional. In the United States, automatic transmission was standard, with manual available as a option. The four-speed automatic was the 722.4 version of the 4G-Tronic. In 1996, this transmission was replaced by the 722.6 or 5G-Tronic five-speed automatic transmission, which received a manual shift mode in 1999. In 2000 the RWD C 240 was available with the optional six-speed G56 manual transmission from the W203.

Mercedes W202 U.S. Models

The W202s in North America included the C220 (later replaced by the C230), C280 (both I6 and V6) and the AMG variants. The W202 Series was launched in the U.S. in November 1993, and unlike models in Europe, featured a third brake light, no specific trim levels, and side markers integrated into the front-turn signals. The U.S. models also did not have the hazard triangle, which is regularly located in the trunk in case of a road emergency. The AMG variants also did not ride as low (about an inch higher) than the Euro spec models. The top speed was also electronically limited for non AMG variants to 130 mph (210 km/h) in the US due to tire speed restrictions. The C43 AMG was able to go 155mph in the U.S. just like the Euro spec models.

German design patents were filed for updates made to the W202 C-Class on 2 May 1996. Later on in June 1997, the C-Class was given a small midlife freshening, with new darker rear tail light lenses, new wheel rims as well as subtle interior trim changes, including the door mouldings. The exterior radio antenna was no longer fender mounted and was integrated into the rear glass. The front and rear bumpers were also reshaped, color-coded side skirts were also fitted. The revised C 200 and C 230 models were fitted with a supercharger and denoted on the trunk lid as a 'Kompressor'.
